Sofa Lead Times Compared: Custom vs In-Stock vs Made-to-Order

"When will it arrive?" is one of the first questions people ask when buying a sofa, and the answer depends almost entirely on how the sofa is made. A sofa sitting in a warehouse can be at your door quickly. A sofa built for you takes longer, but gives you far more control over what you get.

This guide compares the three main ways sofas are sold (in-stock, made-to-order, and custom), how long each typically takes, how pricing and flexibility differ, and how to plan so your sofa arrives when you need it.

The short answer

In-stock sofas are already built and are usually the fastest to arrive, often within a few weeks. Made-to-order sofas are built after you order from a fixed menu of sizes and fabrics, and typically take several weeks to a few months. Custom sofas are also built after you order, but to your chosen dimensions and specifications. At What A Room, custom sofas are built in 4 to 5 weeks, then typically spend 7 to 14 business days in transit, so most orders arrive roughly six to eight weeks after they are finalized.

For a sense of scale across the market, one major national retailer currently advertises in-stock furniture delivered in 1 to 4 weeks, while quoting lead times of 3 to 12 weeks for its custom upholstery. Timelines vary by brand and season, so always check the estimate shown for the exact item and fabric you choose.

In-stock sofas: fastest, with the fewest choices

In-stock (sometimes called "quick ship") sofas are produced in large batches in a handful of popular fabrics and sizes, then stored until someone orders them. The big advantage is speed. If you are moving next month or replacing a sofa that just broke, in-stock can be the right call.

The trade-offs are choice and fit. You are limited to the sizes and colors on hand, and in-stock versions are not always built the same way as a brand's made-to-order versions of the same model. When comparing, read the construction details for the specific version you are buying, not just the model name.

Made-to-order sofas: built for you, from a set menu

Made-to-order sofas are built after you place your order, which opens up more fabrics and sometimes a few size options. Because production starts only once your order is in, wait times are longer than in-stock and can range widely from brand to brand.

One thing to watch: many retailers treat made-to-order upholstery as final sale, because the piece was produced specifically for you. If return flexibility matters, check the policy before you choose a fabric.

Custom sofas: built to your measurements

Custom sofas are also built after you order, but you control the dimensions and comfort, not just the fabric. That makes them the best fit for awkward rooms, specific comfort needs, and anyone who wants a sofa they will keep for a long time.

At What A Room, every sofa is built to order in the USA in 4 to 5 weeks. You choose the width, depth, firmness, legs, and fabric from more than 165 options, and a designer reviews every order before it goes into production. Once your sofa ships, transit typically takes 7 to 14 business days, and the delivery team usually contacts you 1 to 2 days ahead to schedule your appointment. Full details are on our Shipping & Delivery page.

How price compares across the three

In-stock sofas often have the lowest entry prices, because they are mass-produced in standard sizes and fabrics. Made-to-order and custom sofas are built one at a time, so they tend to sit at higher price points, and the final cost depends on size, configuration, and fabric.

At What A Room, collection starting prices currently range from about $2,350 to $2,550, and fabrics are grouped into Standard, Deluxe, and Premium tiers. Delivery fees run $149 to $289 based on order total, and most orders include white glove delivery with room-of-choice placement, setup, and packaging removal.

When comparing prices, it helps to compare like for like. Ask what the frame is made of, what type of springs are used, and what density the seat foam is. A lower price sometimes reflects lighter construction that wears out sooner. Our Materials page lists exactly what goes into every What A Room sofa.

What affects how long your sofa takes

  • Fabric availability. Popular fabrics can sell through, which may add time.

  • Production queue and season. Demand tends to rise around holidays and moving season.

  • Delivery distance and access. Remote areas and buildings with special scheduling requirements can add time.

  • Your own decisions. Time spent waiting on swatches, measuring, or finalizing details happens before production starts.

  • Delivery scheduling. Appointments are routed by geography and carrier availability, so exact dates are not always flexible.

How to plan your order around a date

If you need a sofa by a specific date, such as a holiday or a move-in day, work backward:

  • Order free fabric samples first. What A Room Free Fabric Samples ship in one business day and usually arrive within a few days.

  • Measure your room and delivery path using our Measuring Guide while you wait for samples.

  • Finalize your order about eight weeks before your target date to allow for the 4 to 5 week build and transit time.

  • Not ready for delivery yet? We can hold your finished order at our warehouse at no additional cost until you are ready. Just let us know your timing in advance.

If you want to lock in your order before you have chosen a fabric, our "Buy Now, Decide Later" option lets you change or cancel for a full refund, with no penalties, up until you choose your fabric and finalize your order.

Changes after you order

With any built-to-order sofa, there is a point after which changes are no longer possible. At What A Room, you can make changes or cancel any time before your final work order is approved. Once it is finalized, you have 72 hours to make changes at no additional fee (price differences still apply). After that, changes are reviewed case by case, and once production begins, changes and cancellations are no longer possible. See our Returns & Exchanges page for full details.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a custom sofa take?

It varies by brand. What A Room custom sofas are built in 4 to 5 weeks, then typically spend 7 to 14 business days in transit after shipping.

Why do made-to-order sofas take longer than in-stock?

In-stock sofas are already built. Made-to-order and custom sofas are produced after you order, so the wait includes the time to cut, build, upholster, and ship your piece.

Is an in-stock sofa built the same way as a made-to-order version?

Not always. Some brands use different components for stocked and made-to-order versions of the same model, so compare the construction details for the exact version you are buying.

Can I delay delivery if my home is not ready?

At What A Room, yes. We can hold your order at our warehouse at no additional cost until you are ready. Let us know your timing in advance.

Where does What A Room deliver?

We currently ship within the contiguous United States.
