Custom vs Configurable Sofas: What's the Difference?

Shop for a sofa online and you will see the words "custom", "customizable", and "configurable" used almost interchangeably. They are not the same thing. The difference decides whether a sofa can be built to fit your exact wall, or whether you are choosing the closest match from a set menu.

Here is a plain-language breakdown of what each term really means, what you can and cannot change, and how to tell which one a brand is actually offering.

The short answer

A configurable sofa lets you choose from preset options: a few fixed sizes, a list of fabrics, perhaps a choice of legs or a chaise side. Everything you can pick has already been designed and dimensioned. A custom sofa is built to your specifications, which usually means you can change the dimensions themselves, such as width, depth, or chaise length, along with comfort and finish details. In short, configurable means picking from a menu. Custom means the menu bends to fit your space.

What "configurable" usually means

Configurable sofas are built around a set of standard pieces or sizes. You might choose between a sofa that is 84 or 96 inches wide, add a chaise on the left or right, and pick from a fabric list. Modular systems are a common example: you assemble a layout from pre-sized blocks such as corner pieces, armless seats, and ottomans.

That approach has real strengths. Standard sizes can be produced efficiently, so configurable pieces are often available faster, and modular pieces can be rearranged later. The trade-off is that the dimensions are fixed. If your wall is 91 inches and the options are 84 or 96, you pick whichever compromise hurts least.

What "custom" actually means

A true custom sofa starts with your room. Instead of choosing the closest preset size, you specify the measurements, and the sofa is built to them. Most custom brands still work within a defined set of designs (you are customizing a collection, not commissioning furniture from scratch), but the key difference is that size and comfort are adjustable, not fixed.

At What A Room, every sofa and sectional is built to order in the USA, and you can personalize it down to the inch. On our Daphne collection, for example:

  • Width runs from 80 to 136 inches in 4-inch increments.

  • Seat depth ranges from 23 inches up to 31 inches.

  • Chaise length can be set from 62 to 82 inches.

  • Chaise side can be left or right, chosen as you face the sofa.

You can also choose your cushion firmness (Soft, Medium, or Firm, all on a 2.5 lb high-resilience foam core, or a Trillium down-alternative wrap for a plusher feel), leg style, and fabric from more than 165 options. If the measurement you need falls between our standard options, custom dimensions can be requested at checkout, and a designer reviews every order before production. You can see the full list of choices in our Personalizing Your Sofa guide.

Where the line gets blurry

Because "custom" is such an appealing word, it is sometimes used for products that are really configurable. A sofa offered in three widths and forty fabrics is a well-configured sofa, but it is not built to your dimensions. A few quick questions will tell you which one you are looking at:

  • Can I choose the exact width, or only pick from listed sizes?

  • Can I change the seat depth, or is depth fixed for the model?

  • Can I choose cushion firmness, or does each model come in one feel?

  • Is the sofa built after I order, or does it ship from existing stock?

  • If I need a size between the listed options, can it be made?

If the answer to most of these is "no", the sofa is configurable. That is not a bad thing. It just means you should be confident that one of the preset sizes truly fits.

Which one is right for you?

A configurable sofa makes sense when

  • Your room has plenty of space and standard sizes fit comfortably.

  • You need the sofa quickly and an in-stock version fits your style.

  • You want a modular layout you can rearrange or expand later.

A custom sofa makes sense when

  • Your wall, alcove, or layout is an awkward size and a few inches matter.

  • You have specific comfort needs, such as a shallower seat for easier standing or a deeper seat for lounging.

  • You want a sofa you will keep for many years and would rather not compromise on size or feel.

  • You are designing around a narrow room, a bay window, or a tight walkway.

Does custom cost more?

Not always as much as people expect. Custom sofas are built one at a time, so they are rarely the cheapest option on the market, but many configurable sofas sit in a similar price range once you add premium fabrics or larger sizes. What A Room collections currently start at roughly $2,350 to $2,550 depending on the collection, with fabrics grouped into Standard, Deluxe, and Premium pricing tiers. The more useful comparison is value: what you are getting in construction, comfort choice, and fit for the price.

Construction is worth checking either way. Every What A Room sofa uses a kiln-dried solid wood frame with corner blocks, 8-gauge sinuous springs, and 2.5 lb high-resilience seat foam. Our Materials page explains each component.

What about returns on custom furniture?

This is one of the biggest practical differences between brands, so it is worth reading the policy before you buy. Many retailers treat made-to-order and custom furniture as final sale. What A Room accepts returns on custom furniture built from our standard website options within 60 days of delivery, in new or like-new condition, with a 15% return processing fee and pickup charges. Special requests beyond our standard website options and customer's own material (COM) orders are final sale. Full details are on our Returns & Exchanges page.

How to get custom right

Custom sizing only pays off if the measurements are right. Measure your room and your delivery path before you design, order free fabric samples to check color and texture at home, and if you are unsure, send us your floor plan. Our free Design Consultation includes 2D and 3D renderings so you can see the size, shape, and fabric in your actual space before anything is built.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a custom and a configurable sofa?

A configurable sofa lets you choose from preset sizes and options that have already been designed. A custom sofa is built to your specifications, including dimensions such as width, depth, and chaise length, as well as comfort and finish details.

Is a modular sofa the same as a custom sofa?

No. A modular sofa is made from pre-sized pieces you arrange into a layout. It is flexible, but each module has fixed dimensions. A custom sofa is built to the measurements you choose.

Can I choose the exact width of a custom sofa?

With a true custom sofa, yes. At What A Room, widths on collections such as Daphne are offered in 4-inch increments, and custom dimensions between our standard options can be requested at checkout.

How long does a custom sofa take?

What A Room sofas are built in 4 to 5 weeks. After your order ships, transit typically takes 7 to 14 business days.

Can I return a custom sofa?

Policies vary widely by brand. What A Room accepts returns on custom furniture built from our standard website options within 60 days of delivery, with a 15% return processing fee and pickup charges. Special orders and COM orders are final sale.
