What A Room vs West Elm: Which Sofa Is Worth It?

West Elm is one of the most recognized names in modern furniture, with stores across the country and a huge catalog for every room in the house. What A Room is a smaller, direct-to-consumer brand focused entirely on custom sofas and sectionals built in the USA. Both make good-looking sofas. The right choice depends on what you value most: speed and convenience, or fit and comfort built around you.

Here is an honest, side-by-side look at how the two compare. Details below are based on each company's published information at the time of writing, and specifications can vary by model, so always check the product page for the exact sofa you are considering.

The short answer

Choose West Elm if you want a sofa quickly from an in-stock selection, prefer to shop in person at a store near you, or are furnishing several rooms from one retailer. Choose What A Room if you want a sofa sized to your exact space, want to choose your own cushion firmness, care about consistent construction across every model, or want the option to return a custom piece.

Customization: picking from options vs building to fit

West Elm offers a large range of fabrics (more than 200) and, on some collections, a choice of a few widths and depths. For many rooms, that is plenty.

What A Room is built around customization from the start. On our Daphne collection, for example, you can choose a width from 80 to 136 inches in 4-inch increments, a seat depth from 23 to 31 inches, and a chaise length from 62 to 82 inches. If you need a size between our standard options, custom dimensions can be requested at checkout, and a designer reviews every order before production. That level of control matters most in rooms with awkward walls, tight walkways, or specific comfort needs. See our Personalizing Your Sofa guide for every choice you can make.

Comfort: a set feel vs your choice of firmness

West Elm rates each sofa on a firmness scale from 1 to 5, which is a helpful guide. The firmness comes with the model, so if you love a design but want it softer or firmer, you would need a different sofa.

At What A Room, firmness is your choice on every model. All seat cushions use a 2.5 lb high-resilience foam core, and you choose Soft (24 ILD), Medium (28 ILD), or Firm (45 ILD), or a Trillium down-alternative wrap for a plusher feel. You can read more on our Cushions page.

Construction: What is inside

West Elm publishes construction details on its product pages. On popular models such as Henry and Harmony, it lists kiln-dried, engineered hardwood frames with reinforced joinery and high-resiliency foam seat cushions. On some models, the spring system depends on the version you buy. For example, West Elm's Henry sofa lists sinuous springs for made-to-order fabrics and webbing for stocked fabrics. Some West Elm pieces are also made with FSC-certified wood or carry GREENGUARD Gold certification, so check the product page for the model you like.

What A Room uses the same core construction on every sofa we make: a kiln-dried solid wood frame with corner blocks, 8-gauge sinuous springs, and 2.5 lb high-resilience foam that is CertiPUR-US certified. Every fabric we offer is free of PFAS and PFOA. Our Materials page covers each component in detail.

Lead times: in-stock speed vs a fast custom build

If you need a sofa within a couple of weeks, West Elm has a clear advantage. Its in-stock furniture is advertised for delivery in 1 to 4 weeks. For custom upholstery, West Elm quotes lead times of 3 to 12 weeks.

What A Room does not keep sofas in stock, because every piece is built to order. Our build time is 4 to 5 weeks, and transit typically takes 7 to 14 business days after your sofa ships. If your home is not ready, we can hold your finished order at our warehouse at no additional cost. See our Shipping & Delivery page for details.

Returns: the biggest practical difference

This is where the two brands differ most for custom pieces. According to West Elm's published policy, eligible items can be returned within 30 days, or 7 days for in-stock upholstery, while Made to Order items, including custom furniture, are not eligible for return.

What A Room accepts returns on custom furniture built from our standard website options within 60 days of delivery, in new or like-new condition. A 15% return processing fee and pickup charges apply, and original delivery fees are not refundable. Special requests beyond our standard options and customer's own material (COM) orders are final sale. Full details are on our Returns & Exchanges page.

Warranty

What A Room sofas carry a limited lifetime warranty on the frame, suspension system, and construction-related components against manufacturing defects, plus one year of coverage on cushions and fabric. West Elm offers its own warranty terms and optional protection plans, so review the coverage for any model you are considering. Our coverage is explained on our Warranty page.

Price and value

West Elm's lineup includes some lower entry prices than What A Room, especially on stocked pieces in set fabrics, and its frequent sales and rewards program can lower the cost further. If budget is your top priority, that is worth weighing.

What A Room collections currently start at roughly $2,350 to $2,550, depending on the collection, with fabrics grouped into Standard, Deluxe, and Premium tiers. Delivery runs $149 to $289 based on order total, and most orders include white glove service with room-of-choice placement, setup, and packaging removal. The value case comes down to what is included at that price: custom sizing, your choice of firmness, consistent construction on every model, and a return option on custom pieces.

Shopping experience

West Elm's biggest convenience is its store network. You can sit on sofas in person in many cities, and its free design services and room planner help you plan a whole space. It also ships to more places, including Alaska, Hawaii, and internationally.

What A Room is built for online shopping. You can order up to 12 free fabric samples that ship in one business day, send us your floor plan for free 2D and 3D renderings, and chat with our team any time. Bay Area shoppers can also visit our San Jose showroom. We currently deliver within the contiguous United States.
