If you share your home with a dog, a cat, or small children, the fabric matters as much as the frame. The good news is that most furniture brands now offer fabrics designed for real life. The challenge is that every brand describes them differently. One calls a fabric "performance", another calls it "pet friendly", and a third lists a cleaning code and leaves the rest to you.
This guide explains what those labels actually mean, compares how four popular sofa brands present their pet-friendly and washable options, and shows you how to narrow down the right fabric for your household. Details are based on each brand's published information at the time of writing and can change, so always check the fabric page before you order.
The short answer
All four brands covered here offer fabrics suited to pets and busy households, and all four offer free swatches. The differences are in how easy those fabrics are to find and how much each brand tells you about them. What A Room lets you filter its whole fabric library by features such as Cat-Friendly, Dog-Friendly, Machine Washable, Stain-Resistant, and Liquid-Repellent. Room & Board labels individual fabrics as pet friendly or family friendly and lists cleaning codes and durability results on each fabric page. Crate & Barrel highlights performance fabrics and washable slipcovers on many slipcovered styles. West Elm offers performance fabrics across many of its sofas, and some models include zip-off cushion covers.

What "pet-friendly" really means
There is no industry standard for the term "pet-friendly". Brands use it for fabrics that tend to hold up well to claws, fur, and accidents. In practice, the fabrics that earn the label usually share a few traits:
-
A tight weave. Densely woven fabrics give claws fewer loops to catch and keep fur from working into the surface.
-
A smooth or low-texture surface. Loose, looped weaves such as boucle can snag more easily.
-
Easy cleaning. Fabrics that can be cleaned with water-based cleaners are much easier to live with when accidents happen.
-
Durability. A higher abrasion rating, often measured in double rubs, means the fabric resists wear from everyday sliding, sitting, and scratching.
No fabric is fully scratch-proof. A cat that treats any sofa as a scratching post can eventually damage it. Pet-friendly fabric buys you time and forgiveness, not invincibility. Our Pet-Friendly Sofa Guide covers fabric choice for cats and dogs in more detail.
What "machine washable" really means
"Washable" can mean very different things depending on the brand and the fabric. Before you rely on a washing machine, check two things.
1. Can the covers come off?
A fabric can only go in the washer if the cover is removable. Look for zippered seat and back cushion covers, or a fully slipcovered design. Fixed upholstery (fabric stapled directly to the frame) can only be spot cleaned.
2. What is the cleaning code?
Every upholstery fabric carries a cleaning code that tells you what it can safely be cleaned with:
-
W: Water-based cleaners. The most practical code for pets and kids.
-
W/S: Water-based or solvent-based cleaners.
-
S: Solvent-based cleaners only. Water can leave rings or damage the fabric.
-
X: Vacuum or brush only.
A removable cover in a W-coded fabric is the most washable combination. Even then, most brands recommend spot cleaning first and washing on a gentle, cold cycle when you do, then air drying or using low heat to limit shrinkage. Our Furniture Care Guide has step-by-step care instructions.
Brand by brand
What A Room
What A Room's fabric library is built around filters, so you can start with your household instead of scrolling through every color. On our Free Fabric Samples page, you can narrow the library by Cat-Friendly, Dog-Friendly, Kid-Friendly, Machine Washable, Performance, Stain-Resistant, Liquid-Repellent, Highly Durable, Bleach Cleanable, Fade-Resistant, and Eco-Certified, then by material type such as flat weave, textured weave, velvet, chenille, boucle, or suede.
Every fabric we offer is free of PFAS and PFOA, and many are rated to 100,000 double rubs, which is considered commercial grade. On collections such as Daphne, seat and back cushion covers have hidden zippers for easy removal. You can order up to 12 free samples at a time, and they ship in one business day.
West Elm
West Elm offers more than 200 upholstery fabrics, including performance fabrics that are named as such in the fabric title, such as Performance Velvet. Some models, such as the Henry sofa, are listed with reversible cushions and zip-off covers. West Elm also rates the firmness of each sofa on a scale of 1 to 5, which is helpful if you want a supportive seat for a larger dog to climb onto. Free swatches are available on its site.
Crate & Barrel
Crate & Barrel highlights performance fabrics for kid- and pet-friendly homes, including fabrics from its partner Inside Out, which it describes as resistant to staining, fading, mildew, and pilling. It also notes that many of its sofa slipcovers can go in a home washing machine, and that zippered cushions let you remove covers to deal with spills. The Lounge sofa we reviewed listed more than 230 fabric options and up to 10 free swatches.
Room & Board
Room & Board gives each fabric its own detail page, and many are labeled "Pet friendly" and "Family friendly". Fabric pages list the fiber content, cleaning code, abrasion results, fade resistance, and certifications such as GREENGUARD® Gold where they apply. Room & Board also offers slipcovered sofa styles and free fabric and leather swatches.
How to choose the right fabric for your household
-
Start with a filter, not a color. Narrow by pet-friendly, washable, or stain-resistant first, then choose your color from what is left.
-
Check the cleaning code. W or W/S codes are the most forgiving for pets and kids.
-
Look at the weave. Tight, flat weaves resist claws better than loose or looped textures.
-
Think about fur color. Heathered, multi-tone, and medium-tone fabrics hide fur and everyday wear better than solid black or bright white.
-
Confirm removable covers if machine washing matters to you.
-
Test swatches at home. Run a fingernail across the surface, drip water on a corner to see if it beads, and leave samples where your pets spend time.
Fabric is only part of the picture. Cushion firmness affects how a sofa holds up when pets jump on and off it every day. Our Cushions page explains the difference between Soft, Medium, and Firm.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best sofa fabric for pets?
A tightly woven performance fabric with a W or W/S cleaning code is a strong choice for most pet owners. Cat owners in particular should avoid loose, looped textures that claws can catch.
Are machine-washable sofa covers really washable?
Only if the covers are removable and the fabric is coded for water-based cleaning. Even then, spot cleaning first and washing gently on cold helps the fabric last longer.
Is performance fabric the same as pet-friendly fabric?
Not always. Performance fabrics are engineered for durability and easier cleaning, which usually makes them a good fit for pets, but brands apply both terms differently. Check the specific fabric's details.
How do I find pet-friendly fabrics at What A Room?
Use the Cat-Friendly and Dog-Friendly filters on our Free Fabric Samples page, then order up to 12 free samples to test at home.
Is any sofa fabric scratch-proof?
No. Pet-friendly fabrics resist damage far better than delicate weaves, but a cat that repeatedly scratches one spot can damage any upholstery. A scratching post near the sofa helps.
