Lead time is the window between placing your order and receiving your furniture. It has two distinct halves that often get blended into a single number.
Production time is how long it takes to build your piece. For custom upholstery, that clock starts once your order and fabric are confirmed, which is not always the day you check out.
Transit and delivery time covers everything after the piece is finished: freight across the country, arrival at a local delivery hub, scheduling with you, and the delivery itself.
When you compare retailers, make sure you are comparing the same thing. Ask whether the number you have been given is production only or the full door to door estimate.
How long custom furniture usually takes
Custom upholstery is built for you, which means there is no warehouse shelf to pull from. That is the tradeoff for getting the exact size, fabric, firmness and leg style you want instead of settling for the closest thing in stock.
Across the industry it is common to see quoted lead times of eight to sixteen weeks for made to order upholstery, and imported pieces can stretch well past that once ocean freight and customs enter the picture. Domestic production shortens the timeline considerably, because the piece does not have to cross an ocean before it crosses your threshold.

Stage one: choosing your design and fabric

Once your order and fabric are locked in, your piece goes into production in the USA. This is where the four to five week window applies.
That time is not idle. Frames are built, foam and fill are cut and shaped to the firmness you selected, fabric is cut and sewn to your dimensions, and the piece is assembled and inspected. A custom sofa built to a specific width, a U shaped sectional with multiple joined pieces, and a curved sectional all move through the same schedule, so a larger or more complex configuration does not automatically mean a longer wait.

Stage three: transit, seven to fourteen business days
When your piece is finished it leaves the warehouse and begins its journey to you. Transit time is typically seven to fourteen business days.
You will receive a tracking email once the order has been picked up. What A Room currently ships within the contiguous United States, and does not ship to Alaska, Hawaii, Canada, Puerto Rico, US territories or international destinations.
This is the stage where weather, carrier scheduling and seasonal volume have the most influence. It is also the stage with the most built in flexibility, which brings us to the next point.
Stage four: scheduling and delivery day
Once your order reaches the local delivery hub, the delivery team will usually contact you one to two days ahead to schedule your appointment or give you an estimated window. Deliveries generally run Monday through Friday during daytime hours. Bay Area customers are typically contacted one to two days in advance with a two to three hour window.
Most custom orders are delivered with white glove service, which includes room of choice placement, basic setup or assembly, packaging removal, and up to three flights of stairs where access is safe and practical. In areas where white glove is not available, delivery is made to your doorstep or building entrance instead.

What can extend a custom furniture lead time
Most orders track close to the estimate. When they do not, it is usually one of these:
• Fabric backorder. If your chosen fabric is temporarily unavailable, production cannot begin until it arrives. Ordering swatches early gives you time to pick a backup you would be equally happy with.
• A late fabric decision. With Buy Now, Decide Fabric Later, the production clock starts when the fabric is confirmed, not when the order is placed.
• Order changes after placement. Modifying dimensions, configuration or fabric after production has been scheduled can reset part of the timeline.
• Seasonal demand. Late spring and the run up to the holidays are the busiest windows for furniture delivery nationwide, and carrier networks feel it.
• Access issues discovered on delivery day. If a piece will not fit through a door or stairwell that was not measured in advance, redelivery has to be arranged. This is the delay that measuring first almost always prevents.
How to plan backwards from a date
If you have a fixed deadline, a move in date, a holiday, a family visit, work backwards rather than forwards.
Take your target date and count back roughly six to eight weeks for the full cycle, then add a buffer of one to two weeks for peace of mind. Inside that, allow yourself about a week at the front for swatches to arrive and for you to decide. That puts a comfortable order date at roughly nine to ten weeks before you need the piece in the room.
