Around $2,500 is where many people start looking seriously at a sofa. It is enough to move past entry-level furniture, and it lines up with the starting price of several well-known brands. But two sofas at the same price can be very different underneath, and the difference only shows up a few years in.
This guide compares what roughly $2,500 gets you at five popular brands, using each brand's published prices and specifications at the time of writing. Prices change often and sales are frequent, so treat the numbers as a snapshot and check each brand's site for current pricing.
The short answer
At around $2,500, most popular brands offer a sofa in a set size with a kiln-dried wood frame and a foam-core cushion. The differences come down to four things: whether you can size the sofa to your room, whether the brand publishes its foam density, how long you will wait, and whether a custom sofa can be returned. A custom sofa is worth it when fit, comfort, and longevity matter more to you than speed.

What to look at beyond the price tag
1. Can you size it to your room?
At this price point, most brands offer a few set sizes. That works well when one of them fits. If your wall, walkway, or alcove is an awkward size, being able to choose the exact width and depth can matter more than any other feature. At What A Room, collections such as Daphne offer widths from 80 to 136 inches in 4-inch increments and seat depths from 23 to 31 inches, and custom dimensions between our standard options can be requested at checkout. Our Personalizing Your Sofa guide covers every choice.
2. What is inside the cushions?
Cushions are usually the first part of a sofa to wear out, and foam density is the best single predictor of how long they will last. Many brands describe their foam as "high-resiliency" without publishing a density number. What A Room uses 2.5 lb high-resilience foam in every seat cushion, denser than the 1.5 to 2.0 lb foam common in mass-produced sofas. If a brand does not list the density, it is worth asking.
3. Can you choose the comfort?
At most brands, firmness comes with the model. If you love a design but want it firmer or softer, you would need a different sofa. At What A Room, you choose Soft, Medium, or Firm on every model, or a Trillium down-alternative wrap. Our Cushions page explains the difference.
4. What is the frame made of?
Kiln-dried wood is common at this price, but frames vary. Some brands use engineered hardwood, others solid wood. Every What A Room frame is kiln-dried solid wood with corner blocks at every joint, over 8-gauge sinuous springs. Our Materials page explains why that matters.
5. What happens if it is not right?
Return policies on custom sofas vary more than almost anything else. Some brands do not accept returns on custom or made-to-order pieces at all. Others accept them with fees that range from modest to steep. What A Room accepts returns on custom furniture built from our standard website options within 60 days of delivery, with a 15% return processing fee and pickup charges. Special orders and customer's own material (COM) orders are final sale. See our Returns & Exchanges page.
6. How long will you wait?
In-stock sofas can arrive in a week or two. Made-to-order and custom sofas take longer, from several weeks to a few months depending on the brand. What A Room builds every sofa in 4 to 5 weeks, plus 7 to 14 business days in transit. See our Shipping & Delivery page.
7. What does delivery cost?
Delivery can add a meaningful amount to the total. Room & Board, for example, charges a flat $159 per trip. What A Room delivery runs $149 to $289 based on order total, which is $189 for an order between $2,000 and $4,000, and most orders include white glove service.
So, is a custom sofa worth it?
A custom sofa is worth it when you plan to keep it for years, when your room needs a specific size, or when comfort matters enough that you want to choose it rather than accept the default. The extra wait is the main trade-off, and for many people it is a fair one for a sofa that fits and lasts.
A set-size sofa from a large retailer can be the better value when you need it quickly, when a standard size fits your space well, or when you want to sit on the exact model in a store before buying.
Whichever way you lean, compare cost over time rather than price alone. A sofa that holds its shape for a decade is often better value than a cheaper one that needs replacing in a few years. If you prefer to spread out the cost, financing is available on What A Room orders. See our Financing page.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a custom sofa cost?
Custom sofas from online brands commonly start around $2,000 to $2,500 for a standard-size sofa, with the final price depending on size, configuration, and fabric. What A Room collections currently start at roughly $2,350 to $2,550.
Is a $2,500 sofa good quality?
It can be, but price alone does not tell you. Check the frame material, spring type, and seat foam density. A kiln-dried frame, sinuous springs, and foam of 2.0 lb or higher are good signs, and 2.5 lb high-resilience foam is a strong one.
Why do custom sofas take longer?
Custom sofas are built after you order, to your chosen size and options. In-stock sofas are already built and waiting in a warehouse.
Can you return a custom sofa?
It depends on the brand. Some do not accept returns on custom pieces at all. What A Room accepts returns on custom pieces built from standard website options within 60 days of delivery, with a 15% return processing fee and pickup charges.
How can I try fabrics before buying?
Most brands offer free swatches. At What A Room, you can order up to 12 free samples from our Fabric Samples page, and they ship in one business day.
